Our very own Shane Hervey participated in this program at Oregon Health & Science University as a medical student, which he found to be highly valuable. OHSU reached out to us in the hopes of connecting with more URiM pre-health students.

The Relational Leadership Institute (RLI) launched at OHSU in 2017 because increasing numbers of colleagues were sharing that they were experiencing a sense of dissatisfaction and burnout in their day-to-day work. The relevance and timeliness of these themes has only progressed during COVID as many our colleagues report that:

  • they are at increasingly high risk of work-related psychological distress and more and more likely to be thinking about leaving healthcare entirely;

  • they felt isolated, and sought a community of supportive peers who were also learning how to be more effective leaders and create a more relational culture in their workplace and on their teams;

  • they noticed a “gap” in leadership practices for building safe and healthy teams, managing conflict, and launching critical innovation projects in an authentically relational and collaborative manner.

Relational Leadership is a human-centered approach to leadership that centers collaboration, psychological safety and equity within our teams and our health system. RLI is a 2-month leadership learning collaborative bringing together a diverse, interprofessional group of health professionals at all stages of training/experience to develop critical Relational Leadership practices.

RLI was co-created by Primary Care Progress (PCP) and OHSU, and is being sponsored by OHSU’s Department of Family Medicine, School of Medicine, and School of Nursing. In 2019, RLI was honored to be named a winner of the ABIM Foundation Trust Practice Challenge, a national initiative to identify and promote innovative and effective approaches to build trust in healthcare.

Evaluation results to date show that more than 80% of RLI participants agreed or strongly agreed that they learned practical skills that they were still using over 6 months after the conclusion of the collaborative.

Health professionals/students of all backgrounds are invited to apply.
